Founder Friday: We’ve Overcomplicated Community Sport—Here’s Why That Needs to Stop

We need to talk about simplicity.

In the race to innovate, modern community sport has forgotten its roots. From tech-heavy solutions to complex “engagement strategies,” we’ve built a system where coaches feel pressured to constantly reinvent the wheel. And in doing so, we’ve unintentionally raised the barrier to movement—especially for children, people with disabilities, and underserved communities.

At Move Mojo®, we’re changing that. We believe that movement is a right, not a privilege, and that simplicity, play, and community are the cornerstones of real physical activity engagement.

Remember When Movement Was Just… Fun?

Think back to your childhood. The best games weren’t built in apps or developed through focus groups. They came from the playground. They came from spontaneity.

Tag. Hide-and-seek. Bulldog.
Or in my case? Kicking an uneaten apple across the yard trying to hit the bin—pure joy, zero tech, 100% movement.

These games lasted years. They didn’t require instructions, funding, or “activation strategies.” They were intuitive, inclusive, and timeless. They worked.

So why are we now asking every PE teacher and grassroots coach to create full-blown Netflix-worthy experiences just to get kids to move?

The Problem: Overengineering Kills Confidence

We’re seeing a dangerous trend where:

  • Coaches feel underqualified because they don’t have access to tech or trendy programmes.
  • Teachers feel overwhelmed trying to make every session “different” when their students simply want to move.
  • Organisations funnel money into flashy products instead of investing in what actually works—people.

This isn’t innovation. It’s distraction. And it’s turning movement into a management problem, instead of a human need.

The Fix: Strip It Back

At Move Mojo®, we’ve proven that success—even at the Olympic and Paralympic level—isn’t about overcomplication. It’s about returning to fundamentals.

Here’s how we keep it simple, effective, and inclusive:

We don’t start with rules—we start with fun. Then we layer in learning. Games like Dishes and Domes become tactical challenges just by tweaking space, time, or roles.

1. Play First. Teach Later.

2. Use Task Constraints

Instead of overexplaining, we change the environment and let players discover solutions. This is called a constraints-led approach, and it builds better movers—and thinkers.

3. Focus on Exploration

Let people try things. Let them fail safely. Let them laugh. That’s when confidence, competence, and creativity grow.

Empowering Coaches, Not Replacing Them

We don’t need another app. We need trust in our coaches and teachers.

By giving them the tools and freedom to do what they’re great at—leading play, adapting movement, and building confidence—we unlock something powerful: sustainable, inclusive community sport.

We don’t need to complicate things to make them effective. We need to:

✅ Make movement fun
✅ Keep things accessible
✅ Let people PLAY

Because when movement is simple, it becomes possible for everyone.

Why Move Mojo Exists

I founded Move Mojo after years in elite sport—working with Olympic and Paralympic athletes, building programs for developing nations with the International Olympic Committee, and watching what actually works when it comes to long-term development.

And what worked wasn’t tech.
It wasn’t novelty.
It was simplicity, repetition, play, and human connection.

We took that winning philosophy and applied it to schools, councils, disability sport, and inclusive exercise qualifications. And it’s changing lives.

Final Word: Let’s Get Back to Basics

Movement should be joyful. Coaching should be human. Sport should be accessible to all, not just those with the right app or funding stream.

Let’s stop overcomplicating the system. Let’s start backing our coaches, keeping things simple, and making sport something everyone can be part of.

Because the secret sauce? It’s been simplicity all along.
