Why the best learning happens when you’re not told what to do.
At Move Mojo®, we don’t just tell people how to move — we design environments that make them want to move.
This approach is especially important in adapted coaching, inclusive sport, and PE. Because if the goal is real-world engagement, then the way we teach has to be real-world relevant.
Too often, we see coaching fall into the trap of over-instruction. Do this. Go there. Follow that drill. But the truth is: real development happens when learners are solving problems themselves — not just following directions.
That’s where play-led self-exploration comes in. It’s not fluffy. It’s not soft. It’s tactical, powerful, and underused in traditional coaching models.
Let the Game Do the Teaching
We build games with purpose. Every Move Mojo session layers physical development with tactical thinking — without needing a coach to shout instructions every 10 seconds.
Why?
Because when players figure something out for themselves, they remember it. It becomes theirs.
Take our Capture the Flag session as an example. At first, it looked flat. No forward play. No attacking risk. No movement across the field.
But rather than saying, “Be more aggressive,” we redesigned the environment
Example 1: Changing the Shape of the Game
We added safe zones — areas where players could regroup or reset without being tagged. This subtle change disrupted the defensive lines and forced lateral movement.
Suddenly:
- Players attacked space.
- They found new angles.
- The game came alive — without a single instruction being given.
That’s what game design can do.
Example 2: Adjusting Motivation Through Scoring
In another moment, the group was passive. Stuck in goal defence. No one moving.
So we added more flags. Just one small change — but it created multiple scoring opportunities, which instantly changed the energy.
Players started making calculated moves.
They stopped playing not to lose, and started playing to win.
This is the shift we want — from compliance to creativity.
Example 3: Using Time as a Coaching Tool
In the final game, players were sitting in the ‘goal hold’ zone for too long. Safe, but static. So we added a time limit in that zone.
Result?
Movement. Flow. Decisions under pressure.
Players began weighing up risks and rewards — just like in real sport.
We didn’t say “move more.” We just gave them a reason to.
The ‘Adapt It’ Model in Practice
This whole method feeds directly into the Move Mojo® Adapt It model — a flexible coaching approach that lets you steer behaviour without over-coaching.
Here are some tools we used:
- Area – Adjust pitch size to increase or decrease decision-making speed
- Duration – Use time limits to drive urgency or manage fatigue
- Timing – Control when players can score or rejoin play to influence tactics
- Scoring Methods – Change reward systems to shift focus (more flags = more fun)
- Equipment – Use cones, bean bags, or barriers to introduce constraints
Each tweak is intentional. And together, they build a learning environment that works — even in SEND settings, mainstream PE, or grassroots clubs.
Why This Matters in Inclusive Coaching
For learners with disabilities, neurodivergence, or low confidence, this approach is gold.
Because we remove the pressure of “getting it right” and replace it with permission to explore.
They don’t need to be told how to move — they just need a space that lets them try, fail, reset, and try again. That’s not just sport. That’s life.
And by doing this well, we:
✅ Reduce reliance on verbal instruction
✅ Create universal design for learning
✅ Make sessions more active, adaptable, and self-paced
✅ Develop genuine tactical and physical competence
Final Thoughts: Less Talking. More Learning.
This is how we coach at Move Mojo.
We don’t prescribe. We guide.
We don’t over-talk. We adjust the task.
We don’t assume. We test ideas.
Because coaching isn’t about showing how clever you are. It’s about how many people can leave your session feeling like they figured something out.
And when that happens through play — through real, meaningful games — the learning sticks.
