I’ve been in the pacific delivering education to the region on s&c principles for international NGO’s.
These are 3 topics that I covered in one day that I see effecting us everywhere from England to Australia to the Pacific.
1️⃣Train the person not the disability
People can do so much more than we assume they can. We often use that label as an assumption rather than listening, collaborating and then adapting the environment & task to create an opportunity for them to develop optimally. Something that me and Alex Dowson MSc, BSc work on within our Move Mojo sessions.
2️⃣Anti Fragile Approach – Something that we need to normalise.
Something me and Adam Bromley talk about allot at Move Mojo® – no one is ever going to be prepared for the load demands of life when sitting in a chair 🪑 or doing 2kg clingy band exercises. If we don’t load people then they are underexposed to life demands, it’s better to be strong then weak.
3️⃣Develop not experience -(Not a bums on seat approach)
Something I remember when talking to Neil Plimmer a few months ago – we can all deliver experiences such as going to the fun fair, axe throwing or a bouncy castle – ( basically a bums on seats approach )
It’s not optimal – it does not work – If a person comes in and does not develop through our coaching then they will loose engagement, through not progressing and moving forward.
We need to get rid of this experience based approach and go for a developmental mindset to give persons developmental experiences – if we are good at development we get higher participation rates as a by product – ultimately I’ve seen that does not work the other way around.
I’d be keen to hear anyone else’s thoughts on this.
